Display

Switch the brightness, accent color, language and beat display to suit you. Your choices stay in this browser.

Theme

Use Theme near the bottom of the menu to choose how bright the screen is.

MENUMenu › Theme (D key)
TRY ITPress one and this page switches too
ButtonDisplay
LIGHTLight display
DARKDark display
AUTOFollows your device's dark mode setting
  • Cycle the theme: LIGHT → DARK → AUTOD

The theme you choose also applies to the docs and the landing page. On the landing page, you can also switch it with the sun and moon button at the top right.

Accent color

Use Accent color in the menu to pick one of six colors for the START button, selected items, lit accent beats and more.

MENUMenu › Accent color
TRY ITPick a color to change the sample (the site's colors stay the same)
Accent color
  • Choose from Turquoise (the default), Blue, Violet, Pink, Amber and Lime
  • Every color is tuned so text on it stays easy to read
  • The docs and the landing page use the same color. On the landing page, the color square at the top right switches to the next color each time you press it

Language

Use Language in the menu to switch between Japanese and English. If you switch while reading the docs, you move to the same page in that language.

On the landing page, switch with JA / EN at the top right. The language you pick there is also used the next time you open the app.

Beat display (pendulum)

Choose Switch to Pendulum in the menu to show the beat with a pendulum instead of the beat meter. To go back, choose Switch to Beat Meter.

SCREENMain screen › Beat display (pendulum)
TRY ITPress START to swing the pendulum. Press a number below to change its strength
  • The pendulum reaches the left or right end on each beat. The long tick just outside that end lights up: in the accent color for accent beats, and in the text color for normal beats. Muted beats don't light up
  • The very first beat sounds with the pendulum straight up, and then it starts swinging to the right. In even meters such as 4/4, beat 1 always lands on the left from the second bar on
  • The short ticks sticking out of the fan mark the pattern (guide notes). A guide note sounds as the pendulum passes its tick
  • The weight moves with the BPM. Like a real metronome, the slower the tempo, the higher it sits
  • Press a beat number below to open the same beat settings (strength and bass note) as on the beat meter. Beats with a bass note show its key next to the number

The pendulum only changes the display; what you hear follows the pattern. It also works with a Custom pattern: the end lights follow the first cell of each beat (accent or normal), and the ticks show where sounds play within that beat (they change beat by beat). Press a beat number below to open the custom beat editor.

In odd meters such as 3/4, beat 1 lands on alternating sides each bar.

Full screen

Choose Full Screen from the menu or press F to show the beat display large in the center of the screen, with the BPM number below it. Use it when you look at the screen from a distance, such as on a music stand or next to a drum kit.

  • The beat display is the beat meter or the pendulum, whichever you chose in the menu
  • Move the cursor or tap the screen to show the BPM ruler and the bar with elapsed time, SOUND, TAP, TIMER, and START / STOP at the bottom. The − + on either side of the ruler change the BPM by 1 (hold to keep changing). They fade out after 3 seconds without input
  • While the ruler and bar are shown, clicking or tapping the screen starts or stops playback. When they are hidden, a tap only shows them
  • In Progressive mode, the current BPM number is shown
  • Pressing a beat cell does not open the beat settings. Close full screen to change settings
  • It works in portrait and landscape. On phones and tablets, the rotate button at the top right switches between portrait and landscape, even with rotation lock on. When you rotate the device, the button follows the device's orientation
  • While full screen is open, the screen does not lock automatically
  • Toggle full screenF
  • Close full screenEsc
  • Start / stopSpace

To close it, press the inward-arrows button at the top right.

On computers, Android, and iPad, the browser's address bar is hidden too. On iPhone, the browser frame stays. To hide it as well, add Metronome.fm to your home screen and open it from there.
