Phones and speakers

Control playback from the lock screen, keep playing while you use other apps, add the app to your home screen, and play through speakers.

Lock screen and notifications

While it plays, Metronome.fm shows up on your phone's lock screen and notifications, and in your computer's media controls. You can stop and restart it from there. The play button on your earphones stops it too.

The name of the open setting or track is shown there.

These controls appear only while the metronome screen is open. Opening the docs from the menu stops playback.

Playing while you use other apps

The metronome keeps playing when you switch to another tab or app. On iPhone and iPad, it keeps playing with the screen off on iOS 17.5 and later.

If a phone call or another app's sound interrupts it, it starts again when you come back to Metronome.fm. If it doesn't, press START again.

Adding to your home screen

Use Add to Home Screen in your browser's menu (in Safari on iPhone, it's in the Share menu) to open Metronome.fm from your home screen like an app. It opens on the metronome screen.

Once you've opened the metronome screen while online, you can open it and play even without a connection, such as in a practice room or a basement studio. Features that use the server, like saving and listing settings, AI, audio analysis and contact, work only while you're online.

It keeps the screen awake only in full screen. If you watch the regular screen for a long time, switch to full screen or lengthen the auto-lock time in your device settings.

Playing through speakers (casting)

Metronome.fm plays through the audio output your device is set to. Bluetooth speakers and earphones, and speakers chosen with AirPlay on iPhone, work as they are.

To play through a Google Home or Nest speaker from Chrome on a computer, cast the tab.

  1. 01Open Cast from Chrome's menu at the top right (in some versions it's under Save and share)
  2. 02Under Sources, choose Cast tab
  3. 03Choose the speaker

Casting and Bluetooth add a small delay. The clicks stay evenly spaced, but you hear them later than the beat display on screen. Metronome.fm can't control Google Home directly.
